Special Notice

Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates shall be recruited in the country of the duty station, irrespective of nationality and length of time the candidate may have been in the country. If no suitable candidate is identified, overseas candidates will be considered subject to a passing grade on the relevant entry-level examinations at the duty station.

The candidate is responsible for any expenses incurred in order to take the examination and, in the event of an employment offer, any costs relating to travel and relocation to the duty station.

Org. Setting and Reporting

These posts are located within the Security and Safety Section (SSS), Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Security Sergeant reports directly to the Headquarters Lieutenant and is under the overall supervision of the Chief, SSS.Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Security Sergeant will be required to provide standby services during the weekend, holidays and outside normal working hours and will be responsible for carrying out the following duties:
1. Conducts daily briefings and assign officers to various functions or posts;
2. Provides security and safety services for the protection of United Nations personnel and property; these services include armed security functions;
3. Regulates and controls the flow of vehicles and pedestrians in and out of the UN House and in the Security Control Center;
4. Assists the Security Lieutenant in the daily organization, coordination and supervision of the work of officers assigned to a Platoon/ office;
5. Supervises staff and carries out inspections to ensure that officers on duty are discharging their functions appropriately;
6. Examines routine reports prepared by subordinates and certify their accuracy;
7. Makes recommendations to the supervising officer on operational matters;
8. Briefs officers under command of possible security threats and related operational plans;
9. Assumes control of specific areas as assigned during periods of heightened security;
10.Counsels, coaches and mentors officers under command;
11. Provides input for the performance evaluation of security personnel under command;
12. Prepares written reports of all unusual incidents;
13. Makes recommendations on basic security operation;
14. Performs all other related duties as required.Competencies

High school diploma or an equivalent diploma is required. Training in Police, army, civil defense, national security services is required..Work Experience

A minimum of five years of accumulated security experience in police, army, civil defense, national security, UN security. The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years within the UN security system.Languages

English and French are the official languages of the Secretariat of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required.Assessment
